United Nations International Day of the Girl Child
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2011 to designate October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child.
The purpose of this day is to "to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world" (United Nations).
The theme for 2013 is "Innovating for Girls' Education."
On October 11, 2013 there will be discussion of these issues in Frable 122 at 12 noon. Portions of the documentary, Half the Sky, will be shown and discussed. Dr. Mildred Mickle will read two poems. Light refreshments will be served.
